Ledger Live Desktop

Getting Started — Secure crypto management on your desktop

1. Download Ledger Live

Always download Ledger Live from the official Ledger website to avoid tampered installers. Choose the version that matches your operating system (Windows, macOS, or Linux).

Checklist before installing

  • Confirm you are on the official Ledger domain.
  • Verify file signatures or checksums if provided.
  • Close unnecessary apps during installation for a smooth setup.

2. Install & Initialize

Follow the installer prompts to install Ledger Live. Once installed, connect your Ledger hardware device (USB or supported transport) and unlock it with your PIN.

Initial device setup

  1. New device: follow on-device prompts to set a PIN and generate a recovery seed. Write the seed down on the provided sheet and store it offline.
  2. Existing device: choose "Restore from recovery phrase" only if you already have a valid seed; never enter seeds provided by others.
  3. Confirm device authenticity using Ledger’s on-device checks if available.

3. Add Accounts

Open Ledger Live and add accounts for the cryptocurrencies you want to manage. Ledger Live will sync balances and show transaction history for each account after confirmation on your device.

How to add an account

  1. Click “Add account” in Ledger Live.
  2. Select the coin (e.g., Bitcoin, Ethereum) and follow the prompts.
  3. Confirm actions on your Ledger device when requested.

4. Send & Receive Safely

When sending or receiving crypto, Ledger Live prepares the transaction but your Ledger device must confirm and sign it. This ensures private keys never leave the device.

Best practices for transactions

  • Always verify the destination address on your Ledger device screen.
  • For large transfers, send a small test amount first.
  • Check transaction fees and confirm them on-device before approving.

5. Security & Maintenance

Ledger Live Desktop provides management features, but security depends on correct user practices and maintaining device integrity.

Ongoing security tips

  • Keep Ledger Live and your device firmware up to date via official channels.
  • Never share your recovery seed or PIN. Ledger will never ask for them.
  • Consider using an additional passphrase for hidden wallets if you understand the recovery implications.
  • For high-value holdings, consider multisig or distributed custody approaches.

Troubleshooting & support

If your device is not detected, try reconnecting the cable, switching USB ports, or reinstalling drivers. Consult Ledger's official support pages for persistent issues and follow community resources cautiously.
